The decorative subject, along with its monochrome palette and shadowed modelling, suggests that this is possibly a design for a frieze. A number of similar putti designs are in the collection of Tate, London.Stothard worked on a number of decorative schemes, including designs for Buckingham Palace, the grand staircase of Burghley House, and the cupola of the upper hall of the Advocates' Library, Edinburgh.Provenance: Christopher Powney, Shrewsbury.
