Boats is an original Contemporary artwork realized by Raoul Hausmann (Wien, 1886 – Limoges, 1971) in the 1950s. Original mixed media drawing on paper. Hand-signed on the lower right margin by the artist: Hausmann. Good conditions. Raoul Hausmann represents one of the most important figures of the Berlin Dada and of the figurative art culture of the 20th Century. His experimental photographic collages, poly-material assemblages, sound poems and criticisms of institutions had in fact a profound influence on the European avant-garde of the first postwar period. And it is certainly no coincidence that his 1920 ''mechanical head'' is considered one of the icons of the 20th Century. He lived for a long time in Berlin and Weimar as a lecturer at the Bauhaus. During the Nazis, to escape the persecutions that struck the exponents of the avant-gardes, he moved first to Ibiza, then to Zurich and Prague, and finally to Limoges, where he will stay after the war and where he will live until his death. He played a central role in the Berlin Dada movement, working in particular in the photographic field. He is considered the inventor of photo-montage, a technique he passed on to Paul Citroen, his favorite pupil. In the 1960's, his figure and vision of him also had a great influence on American pop art artists, such as Yves Klein and Robert Rauschenberg, who intertwined important correspondence with him.
