Biography
He was born in Mantua on December 13, 1955.
He enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna to graduate in 1978. He began his artistic activity while attending the Academy, with participation in group shows organized by the high school, to prepare then, the first solo exhibition entitled "RI/Velare" at the Galleria il Chiodo in Mantua in 1979.
This was followed, in 1980, by "Accursia" curated by Concetto Pozzati, at the Palazzo D'Accorsio in Bologna; the following year he exhibited at the Galleria Il Chiodo (MN)and, in 1982, at the Galleria Tommaseo in Trieste with the exhibition "Una ipotesi visiva"; then at the Galleria San fedele in Milan in 1984. In the following years Gradi is present in several national events: in 1983 in Suzzara he is invited to the Review "Eight young artists in the gallery" wanted by the local Galleria Civica d'Arte Contemporanea; in the following year, at the Casa del Mantegna. Figure at the review "Squilibri", and with Chiara Dynys sets up a solo exhibition at the Galleria Libreria Einaudi in Mantua. In 1984 he participated in the Biennale Giovani in Faenza and the traveling Biennale Giovani, both editions sponsored by the Galleria Comunale d'Arte Moderna in Bologna; he also figures at the Galleria Ferrari in Verona on two occasions, presenting an important cycle of works with Zanzibar. This was followed by the cycle of Piccoli Atlanti, arranged in a one-man show at Galleria Corrani dì Mantova in 1986; to the representations of l'Arcipelago occidentale, presented in Graz in 1987 and, after participation in the XXXIIl edition of the Premio Suzzara in 1993, in Brescia in 1994; and finally to the cycle of Alambrando executed between 1997 and 1999.
The installations in Munich, Cologne, Vienna, up to those in Orlando, Florida, and Tsukuba, Japan, are from the 1990s.
In 2000 from April 8 to June 30, he participated in the exhibition "Art in Mantua 1950-1999" in the Isabella d'Este Apartment of the Ducal Palace in Mantua.
Marco Gradi, in addition to his activity as a painter, is involved in research on the works of the past, adopting a principle related to the morphology of the painting: conformation, structure, structural analysis of pigments, stratigraphy, visual perception and semiology on the body of the painting. His are the research and studies on Baschenis, Lo Spagnoletto, Domenico Zeni and other artists of Coeve characteristics.
In 2004 Marco Gradi founded the magazine "La Tenda rossa," in collaboration with Sabine Frank and Marco Paladini, with the collaboration of Campanotto Editore; the magazine is distributed in Italy by Feltrinelli bookstores

Il s'inscrit à l'Académie des beaux-arts de Bologne et obtient son diplôme en 1978. Il a commencé son activité artistique pendant qu'il fréquentait l'Académie, en participant à des expositions collectives organisées par le lycée, pour préparer ensuite la première exposition personnelle intitulée "RI/Velare" à la Galleria il Chiodo de Mantoue en 1979.
L'année suivante, il expose à la Galleria Il Chiodo (MN) et, en 1982, à la Galleria Tommaseo de Trieste avec l'exposition "Una ipotesi visiva" ; puis à la Galleria San fedele de Milan en 1984. Dans les années qui suivent, Gradi est présent dans plusieurs manifestations nationales : en 1983, à Suzzara, il est invité à la revue "Huit jeunes artistes dans la galerie" voulue par la Galleria Civica d'Arte Contemporanea locale ; l'année suivante, à la Casa del Mantegna. En 1984, il participe à la Biennale Giovani de Faenza et à la Biennale Giovani itinérante, deux éditions parrainées par la Galleria Comunale d'Arte Moderna de Bologne ; il figure également à deux reprises à la Galleria Ferrari de Vérone, où il présente un important cycle d'œuvres avec Zanzibar. Viennent ensuite le cycle des Piccoli Atlanti, présenté lors d'une exposition personnelle à la Galleria Corrani dì Mantova en 1986, les représentations de l'Arcipelago occidentale, présentées à Graz en 1987 et, après avoir participé à la XXXIIe édition du Premio Suzzara en 1993, à Brescia en 1994, et enfin le cycle des Alambrando, exécuté entre 1997 et 1999.
Les installations à Munich, Cologne, Vienne, jusqu'à celles à Orlando, Floride, et Tsukuba, Japon, datent des années 1990.
En 2000, du 8 avril au 30 juin, il a participé à l'exposition "Art in Mantua 1950-1999" dans l'appartement Isabella d'Este du palais ducal de Mantoue.
Marco Gradi, en plus de son activité de peintre, se consacre à la recherche sur les œuvres du passé, en adoptant un principe lié à la morphologie de la peinture : conformation, structure, analyse structurelle des pigments, stratigraphie, perception visuelle et sémiologie sur le corps de la peinture. Il effectue des recherches et des études sur Baschenis, Lo Spagnoletto, Domenico Zeni et d'autres artistes présentant les caractéristiques de Coeve.
En 2004, Marco Gradi a fondé le magazine "La Tenda rossa", en collaboration avec Sabine Frank et Marco Paladini, avec la collaboration de Campanotto Editore ; le magazine est distribué en Italie par les librairies Feltrinelli
