Composition with friar is a beautiful preparatory drawing made by the French artist Michel Dumas in the mid-19th century. There is a long inscription in French relating to the figure of Pope Stefano I, saint and martyr, who was buried in the cemetery near the Catacombs of San Callisto in Rome. The image represents the statue of a friar, holding a book, and standing near other big books. He is wearing a big hooded mantle, a Medieval garment, according to the Pre-Romantic fashion and taste of the re-evalutation of images and of history typical of 19th-century artists: drawn from real life, or maybe a project for a painting or for a funerary monument. Furthermore, there is a list of indications on the context in which the statue is inserted and on how to represent the whole composition. The state of preservation is excellent. Michel Dumas was a French painter. First pupil of Grobon and Bonnefond at the School of Fine Arts in Lyons. He arrived in Paris where he entered the laboratory of Ingres, with whom he established a lifelong friendship. Thanks to the income from private commissions, he was able to leave for Rome, where he has stayed with Ingres for 16 years. He ended his career in his hometown, where he died in 1878. The drawing is very interesting because it is a preparatory work realized by an important artist with great technical skills, particularly fond of sacred painting. Furthermore, this testimony on Pope Stefano I and on his life is very interesting for a work realized in the period in which the artist dwelled in Rome. This artwork is shipped from Italy. Under existing legislation, any artwork in Italy created over 70 years ago by an artist who has died requires a licence for export regardless of the work’s market price. The shipping may require additional handling days to require the licence according to the final destination of the artwork.
