This important painting by English artist Charles Napier Kennedy comes from the Abbey House Museum in Leeds as attested by extensive documentation in our possession that will naturally accompany the painting.
The work is mentioned in the Benezit Dictionary of Painters and Sculptors as pictured.
The painting has its important frame created especially for the painting at the time it entered the Leeds Temple Newsam House museum. This is attested by the various graphite inscriptions directly on the frame itself: "PURCHASED 1891" (i.e. purchased by the Museum in 1891), the name of the artist Charles Napier Kennedy and the title of the work "THE MERMAID" i.e. The Mermaid.
Charles Napier Kennedy was born in London in February 1852, the son of Lieutenant Colonel John Pitt Kennedy began his studies at the Slade School and specialized in Paris.
He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1872 and was an active participant until 1894, as well as at the Society of British Artists and the New Gallery.
In 1886 he began exhibiting at the Royal Hibernian Academy.
He was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours.
Some of his best paintings were exhibited at the New Gallery, including "The Blond Slave Who Made Himself A King,"(A Slave Who Made Himself A King) still on view at the Corporation Art Gallery in Manchester.
His Neptune, a fine vigorously painted picture, is at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool; it was immortalized by P. A. Masse for the January 1890 Art Journal.
The National Gallery of Ireland owns 'The Boy and the Dryad,' given to the museum by his wife upon his death. Lucy KENNEDY (1860-1925) born Marwood, painter of figures and domestic subjects who exhibited mainly in London.
On January 17, 1898 Kennedy died in St. Ives, Cornwall.
