French comfortable, Louis XV and Louis XVI style transition, around 1780 - France
Exquisite French commode. It stands out for the use of different precious wood that contribute to the piece a delicious tonal variety and for the incrustations so typical of the taracea technique, performing different geometric motifs, mainly of cubes and rhombuses. Taracea is a very refined artistic technique. Mixtilinear profile and galveated legs, with bronze clogs on the front legs. It is presented in 2 large capacity records. The black marble envelope is original.
Made between the end of the 18th and early nineteenth century, just at the time of transition between Louis XV and Louis XVI. During this period, characteristics of both styles were mixed, as can be seen in this piece. Louis XV identifies with Rococó, including a more profuse and detailed decoration, while Louis XVI contrasts with the previous Classical architecture. It is characterized by lightness, harmony and proportion, leaving aside the heaviness and excess of the styles it follows. It stands as a more discreet and elegant style.
It is an exquisite, refined and timeless piece, suitable for any space and atmosphere, which will contribute great elegance. It is ideal to combine with modern and design art. It comes from an important private collection from northern France.
About the technique
Taracea is an artisanal technique that applies to the lining of pavements, furniture, walls, sculptures or various surfaces and artistic objects. For its realization, cut pieces of different materials such as wood, shell, ivory, pearly or even metals are used. These small pieces are fitted on a support in order to, as if it were a puzzle, configure a specific design or decoration. In short, it is a completely complex and laborious embedding work. The key to configuring the designs and that the different pieces can clearly differentiate each other in the use of different shades. with the alternation of colored materials or diverse nuances, a chromatic game and contrast are achieved that, in case of different stones, adopts the name of “mosaics”.
