Still Life with Flowers and Citrus Fruit
Follower of Abraham Brueghel (Antwerp, 1631 – Naples, 1697)
Oil on canvas (70 x 52 cm - Framed 85 x 67 cm)
The composition depicts a rich bouquet of various botanical varieties, including white and pink roses, anemones, carnations, and fringed tulips, arranged in a glass vase. In the foreground, on a stone surface, are two lemons and a cut red tulip, typical details of Baroque still lifes that create depth and realism.
The painting, of pleasing pictorial quality and excellent condition, is characterized by its rich and vibrant colors and dates to the late 17th or early 18th century.
The pictorial style suggests a stylistic connection to the Nordic tradition among the followers of Abraham Brueghel (Antwerp 1631 – Naples 1697). Originally Flemish, he worked in Italy for most of his career, first in Rome and then in Naples. Brueghel was one of the European exponents of the still life genre in the second half of the 17th century.
Abraham Brueghel is credited with popularizing a new compositional model for still life, in which colorful flower displays are often juxtaposed with juicy fruit, highlighted by crisp light and vibrant colors.
