Mad for Marble

This week, we're celebrating all things MARBLE. From our latest feature story to fabulous new objects and more, we just can't get enough. In that spirit, we reached out to some of our favorite marble-loving designers—including Jakub Zak and Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte of Milan-based studio Oeuffice—to chat about what draws them to this beloved material.

AC: We're seeing a lot of great marble work right now. Why do you think there's so much marble going on at this particular moment?

Oeuffice: Materials are linked to the way people perceive their environment and want to interact with it. We feel there is a special attention at the moment on natural materials expressing a certain historical nostalgia but also an awareness on the value of resources. After a decades-long invasion of synthetic and technical materials, there is a will to invest in eternal quality and rare essences such as stone.

AC: Why do you personally choose to work with the material? What draws you to it?

Oeuffice: We have always been drawn to the eternal and monumental quality of marble in general, and in our years living in Milan and traveling Italy, we have been exposed to some incredibly inspiring marble work and an exemplary historical precedence. In fact, we had already explored the use of marble in our previous collection Milanes, and with the Kapital collection, we wanted to really push the eternal and monumental aspect of this historic material. There is a lot of pressure in the design to inspire and reflect the context of its époque and become a new classic in a way that will survive in the future with dignity.
