Edward Richie Butler was born in Sacramento, California, in 1855 and studied from 1877 in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts under Jean-Léon Gérôme. He spent most of his career in Paris
He was one of Sacramento's most talented early artists. Butler was born and raised near the Crocker Art Museum at 3rd and N Streets. He was the brother of the artist Frederick S. Butler and son of Miner F. Butler, architect of the Capitol in Sacramento.
First exhibition in the Salon in 1885.
After a study trip through Italy, Butler settled in Überlingen/Lake Constance.
He exhibited at many art exhibitions, including in Mannheim and Düsseldorf in 1907 and the Munich Secession in 1908, as well as at Cassirer in Berlin.
