Victor Vasarely was born on April 9, 1906 in Pécs, Hungary, as Gyözö Vásárhelyi. In 1927 Vasarely began his artistic education at a private drawing school in Budapest. In the following year, he transferred to the "Mühely" training school (Engl. "Workshop") under the direction of Sándor Bortnyik, where he primarily taught the ideas of the Bauhaus. After moving to Paris in 1930, Vasarely worked successfully as a commercial graphic artist, systematically exploring the visual and emotional possibilities of various graphic media. In 1947, this led him to the realization that geometric means can be used to evoke sensations that convey new ideas about space, matter and energy. He developed an independent geometric abstraction, whose variations lead to optical pictorial patterns with kinetic effects. In a latticework, the artist arranges geometric forms in bright colours in such a way that the eye gets the impression of a fluctuating movement. Vasarely thus contributes significantly to the development of Op-Art. His active commitment to art in public space began with the decoration of the university in Caracas in 1954. He designed murals in metal and ceramics, mainly for buildings in France. In addition, his works are regularly shown at the documenta from 1955 to 1968. For the XX. Olympiade in Munich, Vasarely designed the official spiral-shaped logo. In 1976, the artist founded the Fondation Vasarely in Aix-en-Provence, with whose help an institute for contemporary design and architecture was established in 1981. In 1976 the Vasarely Museum opens in his native city of Pécs, a second one follows in 1987 in Zichy Castle in Budapest. Victor Vasarely died on 15 March 1997 in Paris, and the foundation he had established had to close shortly afterwards. However, the processing of Vasarely's estate by his daughter Michelle ensures the maintenance of the artist's popular pictorial world.
