About this Museum

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the largest art museum in the United States. It was founded in New York City in 1870 with the philanthropic goal of bringing art education to the American people. The institution is divided into a several curatorial departments, including—but not limited to—Egyptian Art, Medieval Art, African, Asian, Oceanic, Byzantine and Islamic Art, European Masters, American Fine and Decorative Art, Modern and Contemporary Art, Photography, and Antique Weapons and Armor.

The Met’s Costume Institute is internationally acclaimed, both for its permanent collection and its temporary exhibitions spotlighting the most influential fashion talents. A somewhat less recognized treasure of the Met collection is the series of period rooms, such as the ancient Roman bedroom excavated near Pompeii, the Louis XVI grand salon from 18^th-century Paris, and the Frank Lloyd Wright Room in the American Wing.
