Jurriaan Molenaar — Arteaga IV
Acrylic on linen
Dimensions: 120 × 150 cm (approx. 47.2 × 59.1 in)
Year: 2024
Arteaga IV is the most commanding work in Jurriaan Molenaar’s acclaimed Arteaga series — a collection of four paintings inspired by Le Corbusier’s visionary sense of openness, geometry, and the dialogue between architecture and light. Measuring an impressive 120 × 150 cm, this acrylic on linen painting envelops the viewer in a serene, structured world where form, shadow, and horizon line meet in perfect equilibrium.
Molenaar distills architectural elements to their essence, using clean lines, carefully balanced planes, and a refined palette to evoke both stillness and space. The composition suggests an open, modernist structure by the sea, where light pours through geometric apertures and casts precise shadows — a poetic nod to Le Corbusier’s modernist principles of proportion, openness, and harmony with nature.
About the Artist
Jurriaan Molenaar (b. 1968, The Netherlands) is a Dutch contemporary painter renowned for his architectural minimalism. Molenaar studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam (Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten), founded in 1870 by King William III. This classic academy has long been a meeting ground for philosophers, academics, and artists—a crucible where ideas are tested and visions expanded. Molenaar has developed a signature style that blurs the boundaries between painting and architecture.
His works often depict imagined or idealized spaces, stripped to their structural essence, creating meditative environments that invite contemplation.
Molenaar has exhibited widely across Europe, and his work is held in both private and public collections. His paintings resonate with collectors who appreciate modernist aesthetics, spatial clarity, and the quiet drama of light and shadow.
