Tobias and the Angel
Oil on canvas
63 x 76 cm. - Framed 77 x 90 cm.
We are pleased to offer this exquisite painting, depicting the protective Archangel Raphael with the young Tobias, which is based on the painting by Giovanni Gerolamo Savoldo (oil on canvas, 120 x 160 cm.), one of the great masters of the early Brescian Renaissance, dated around 1527 and now housed in the Galleria Borghese in Rome [1].
In particular, the work, reproduced here with great character and excellent quality, features the Archangel Raphael as he protects the boy Tobias with his great wings and shows him the right path. The meaning of this iconography, taken from the Bible (Tobit 5:4-8), has taken on a broader meaning over time, eventually becoming the emblem of the human soul protected by its guardian angel.
The subject, particularly popular in Renaissance art for its powerful spiritual value, is sublimely rendered here by Giovan Girolamo Savoldo (c. 1480 - post-1548), who is not coincidentally considered one of the most mysterious and fascinating painters of his time, capable of poetically blending Lombard figurative culture with the evocative power and color of Venetian painting.
Born in Brescia, but active primarily in Venice, he converted his origins to a style strongly influenced by contemporary Titian approaches, including the use of bright colors to simulate the effect of a light source shining from the background of the painting on the angel, casting the young man's face into shadow.
This light device, useful to the artist to express his extraordinary pictorial skills and also found in our canvas, gives the draperies a shiny, sometimes metallic texture, accentuating their colors and deep folds.
The masterful technique, playing on a cold light with almost surreal effects, gives the draperies—here very evident, especially on the angel's robe—a silvery sheen that almost makes them appear wet. This became one of the artist's hallmarks, rarely matched by his contemporaries.
