ARTIST
Gianni Berengo Gardin was born in Santa Margherita Ligure. He grew up and studied in Venice and began dedicating himself to photography in the early 1950s. from that moment on he will never stop photographing, thus accumulating a monumental photographic archive capable of recounting the evolution of the Italian landscape and society from the post-war period to today.
from the beginning he focused his attention on a variety of themes ranging from social, daily life, the world of work to architecture and landscape.
Berengo Gardin's photographic training took place thanks to the Magnum of which Cartier Bresson was the founder: at the beginning of the 1960s he came into contact with Cornell Capa, who sent him some photography books, and from that moment he established that his photography will have to follow in the footsteps of the great photographers of Magnum and Life, describing society through the eyes of a craftsman aimed at social commitment.
Some of his works have touched on truly delicate issues of Italian society. In the 1930s he created Morire di Classe, a reportage on Italian mental asylums which highlighted the battle fought at that time by Franco Basaglia.
