Giacomo Guardi (Venice, 1764 – Venice, 1835) follower
View of Venice with the Basilica della Salute and the Punta della Dogana
Oil on canvas (40 x 52 cm - framed 48 x 60 cm)
This beautiful, exquisitely executed view of Venice features the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute, with its large dome dominating the entrance to the Grand Canal, with the Punta della Dogana on the far left, which joins the Basin of St. Mark.
This painting is by an artist with great view painting skills, one of the outstanding followers of Giacomo Guardi (Venice, 1764 – Venice, 1835), son and pupil of the renowned view painter Francesco Guardi.
His production primarily features small-format compositions, designed to satisfy the demands of collectors and sophisticated foreign travelers who, during their Grand Tour, desired an elegant memento of the lagoon city. Their compact size allowed them to be carried with luggage, while these small "postcards" have now become highly sought-after and appreciated by modern collectors.
