Soriana lounge chair is low and soft and invites the sitter to sink in. Its peculiar feature is the external chromed steel cage. It gives a shape to the otherwise unformed design.
The padding of Soriana is made of polyurethane foam and Dacron fiberfill, upholstered with wool or leather and enveloped by a clamp made of chromed steel. Two parts compose the external cage. Two steel plates link them with the basis. Then, two covered buttons on the sides of the backrest link the coating with the external support elements. Furthermore, two covered buttons placed on the front of the backrest tighten the upholstery to improve the shape. This is possible since a wire links them with two plastic supports embedded in the back of the clamp. In the same way, there are four covered buttons on the seat linked with the basis. The basis is made of black lacquered beech. Close to the front of the basis, there is the Cassina paper mark.
Afra and Tobia Scarpa designed Soriana in 1969 for the Italian company Figli di Amedeo Cassina, after the great success of 924 lounge chair, 121 chairs, and Ciprea armchair.
In that years, the great innovations in the molding techniques of polyurethane foam introduced new ways of thinking about sofas.
So, the idea that led to Soriana was to wrap a bunch of wool with a cloth to create a big bundle, giving it support and a shape (formless) with an external steel clamp grabbing it. The basis is a tiny wooden slab.
At first, Afra and Tobia Scarpa designed a lounge chair.
Afterward, they extended the project to a whole range of seating units.

Le fauteuil de salon Soriana est bas et doux et invite la personne assise à s'y enfoncer. Sa caractéristique particulière est la cage extérieure en acier chromé. Elle donne une forme à ce design autrement informe.
Le rembourrage de Soriana est fait de mousse de polyuréthane et de fibres de Dacron, tapissé de laine ou de cuir et enveloppé d'une pince en acier chromé. Deux parties composent la cage extérieure. Deux plaques d'acier les relient à la base. Ensuite, deux boutons recouverts placés sur les côtés du dossier relient le revêtement aux éléments de soutien externes. De plus, deux boutons recouverts placés sur l'avant du dossier resserrent le revêtement pour en améliorer la forme. Ceci est possible car un fil les relie à deux supports en plastique encastrés à l'arrière de la pince. De la même manière, quatre boutons couverts sont placés sur l'assise et reliés à la base. La base est réalisée en hêtre laqué noir. Près de l'avant de la base, il y a la marque de papier Cassina.
Afra et Tobia Scarpa ont conçu Soriana en 1969 pour la société italienne Figli di Amedeo Cassina, après le grand succès de la chaise longue 924, des chaises 121 et du fauteuil Ciprea.
Dans ces années-là, les grandes innovations dans les techniques de moulage de la mousse de polyuréthane ont introduit de nouvelles façons de concevoir les canapés.
Ainsi, l'idée qui a donné naissance à Soriana a été d'envelopper un tas de laine avec un tissu pour créer un gros paquet, en lui donnant un support et une forme (sans forme) avec une pince extérieure en acier qui le saisit. La base est une minuscule plaque de bois.
Au départ, Afra et Tobia Scarpa ont conçu une chaise longue.
Par la suite, ils ont étendu le projet à toute une gamme de sièges.
